Comeback Medvedev Secures Maiden Trophy in Over Two Years

Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's 21 titles have been won on hard surfaces

A comeback the Russian player claimed his first title for over two years with a win over Frenchman Moutet in the competition final.

The Russian, a former top-ranked player, has had a difficult period, winning just one match at the big events and undergoing a setback at the US Open.

His unpredictability on the tennis tour - and issues with his serve in specific - caused him falling of the elite rankings and eventually splitting with long-time mentor Gilles Cervara.

Now working with his coach and his other coach, the tennis star has steadily progressed in the recent weeks - culminating in a closely contested 7-5 4-6 6-3 triumph over Frenchman Corentin Moutet.

This marks his initial championship following the Rome competition and maiden on a hard court since spring of 2023.

Victory also indicates he has secured twenty-one championships at 21 distinct competitions.

"For the first time I am participating in a competition with my two daughters at once, so to get a championship is especially meaningful," stated ranked player Medvedev.

"This victory is in dedication of my second daughter Victoria, because the first title I achieved when my first daughter my daughter was born was for her."

Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, had been defeated in his past six championship matches, including in Halle previously this season.

The player's retrieving play style and regular outbursts on court had prompted commentators to doubt if his ability to compete at the top level was concluded.

Yet the player has made changes in recent weeks, attempting to approach the net and play aggressively, backed up by an enhanced serve.

He fought back from a deficit in the first set against the tricky Frenchman, taking four of the concluding five exchanges to go ahead.

The competitors traded break points in the middle set before the Frenchman, bidding for his initial ATP Tour title, took control to create a decider.

Moutet saved four initial chances in a tight final set before Medvedev won the break to 15 to secure the win.

Fittingly, the winner clinched victory with a rally at the front of the court, with his opponent unable to control a return after two hours and 38 minutes.
