The artist has given the complete sum of his twenty-five thousand pound award winnings to the trust for venues, which operates to preserve the United Kingdom's grassroots concert spaces.

Fender was awarded the cheque on mid-October as his new release People Watching was named the top album of the past year.

Fender has chosen to hand the money over to the MVT, in appreciation of the vital role small stages had in his beginning days.

"As an artist couldn't be pursuing my current career if it hadn't been for all the shows I played around the region, and beyond, when I was beginning," remarked the artist. "These spaces are legendary, but they are in difficulty."

Beginning in 2023, at least 150 of these spaces have shut down – approximately one-sixth of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, top acts like Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the trust in its attempts to support the industry, by adding a modest fee to their admission fees, which goes to help smaller concert halls.

Sam Fender also took part, generating over £100k on his live tour to support thirty-eight small stages across Britain.

The donation helped locations that were facing potential shutdown due to challenges arising from flooding, blazes and family tragedies, as well as permit problems, legal disputes and noise complaints.

Other venues obtained financial assistance in upgrading amenities and sound and lighting systems that helped artists and concertgoers.

"The idea that money from performances in big venues backs the smaller venues, where it begins for performers like me, is just logical," Sam Fender has said.

The musician is among several artists to give his Mercury Prize winnings to charitable organizations.

Back when Pulp earned the award in 1996 for their release the album, vocalist Jarvis Cocker stated that the act would give their winnings to the charity War Child.

In 2002, musician she shared her prize between several charities, including the children's charity and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"And I contributed a thousand pounds to the center, to their classes, because I trained in gymnastics when I was younger and they required updated gear," Ms Dynamite shared with the media.

In recent years, Ezra Collective donated their prize money to the youth organization that developed their band, as well as other grassroots music organisations.

And the 1994 recipients M People donated their winnings to a charity for MS after a close contact was diagnosed the condition.

"Receiving the award was ample," said vocalist Small. "The prize was the cherry on top but we didn't require the cherry, because we had the main prize. So our winning impacted the lives of others."

Recently, the Music Venues Trust revealed it had protected several local spots in the South East, by placing them under community ownership.

The first in that area and the other in the city were bought under the community ownership program, which is backed by the arts council and enthusiasts who buy "ownership units" in the properties.
